Submarine Warfare...how do you sink the damn things

  • I paid to find my enemies units..found his subs and then tried to attack them with shell fire from cruisers..and then tried sitting on them with cruisers and land forces. It still sank my cruiser. What's the best method for sinking a sub after you've found it?

  • Since I served on 2 destroyers while in the US Navy and maintained and operated the ASROC antisubmarine weapon system I am quite aware that destroyers can sink submarines...but the game DOESN'T HAVE DESTROYERS. Does anyone have a useful answer? Is the only way to sink them to stack up several cruisers...and risk losing one or two?

OK, I'm confused. I just attacked 2 cruisers with 3 subs. They were within range of shore guns. I understand that while attacking submarines are visible and open to attack (why they are to shore guns I don't know, but any way) and I lost one while sinking 1 cruiser. Then while the attack continued my subs stayed under attack by the shore guns. I came back later and the last cruiser was gone and my 2 subs were still under assault. So I moved them ...but they stayed under assault and I lost one more. My question is...how do submarines under water get destroyed by surface artillery? When I used a spy to find the sub and fire on it there was no result...it said I was firing at water. I don't get it.

  • oh, forgot that you may be talking about the game LOL

planes, go with bombers or spam more subs than him, but bombers should be, true tho, if he's an experienced player and also a very active one, planes can be useless as he'll just split and make you lose the round

i wouldn't suggest investing in ships as the enemy will go to sleep at some point and you'll be able to catch him with bombers

Soldiers! don't give yourselves to brutes

men who despise you, enslave you

who regiment your lives, tell you what to do

what to think and what to feel!

Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle,

    use you as cannon fodder.

Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men

machine men with machine minds and machine hearts!

  • I detect submarines via:

    1. Spies -- reveal armies and then use ranged units to attack 'em from afar.

    2. Aeroplanes -- set them on patrol over an area where you think a sub is lurking by. If you detect them, send in your bombers or any other ranged units to destroy them while they are detected.

    3. Infantry bait -- use a certain amount of inf. units as sacrifice to detect lurking subs under water. If enemy subs attacks the bait, use that time to attack 'em with your ranged units.

    4. Counter-submarines -- send submarines as well. If possible, more than what the enemy have.

  • Ok, newbie player here.

if someone is attacking your sub- move it a little bit to the right or left and you are save from any range attack

    OP mechanic

I tried using a sub last game. Made one sub, attacked a stack of 72 transports, blew up 14 before the stack sunk my sub. I had thought id be able to retreat my sub out of combat before i lost it but the transports seemed to hold me in place.

I am not sure what you mean by "move a little bit left or right" perhaps you just mean perspective ... i think "forward and back". It seems to me once you engage troops retreating is very hard if not impossible. The same event happened with one of my cruisers where the same player used a small stack of transports to hold my cruiser in place while he brought more units into the fray. I tried withdrawing my cruiser but it wouldnt budge.

Should subs be able to strike and melt away? Is there a special way to use them?

  • To Lord Dragos - Greetings!

Think of the combat in this game in two forms - knife fight inside a telephone booth and ranged combat.

All knife fights are resolved to the death - one side or the other will win. With ranged combat, you have can withdraw after shooting. Call it shoot and scoot. Cruisers have the shortest range so you have to be careful with them. The enemy closed in, your cruiser fired at range and then he closed into knife fighting range and picture 1600's pirates pulling up alongside your ship and boarding it...

How to kill subs - air patrols with fighters with bombers waiting at closeby aerodromes ready to launch once a sub has been found. Otherwise 20 inf at sea can engage one sub at 1-1 odds.

Sub has a strength at sea of 4 = almost a battleship or 2 cruisers.

2 subs can sink a battleship. So attach some cruisers with battleships to act as escorts and provide additional anti-aircraft and anti-surface/sub defense.

    Hope this helps. :)

  • I use subs (4 hit points) for invisible view of water ways also to engage Battleships (BB's) in melee, they are invisible and basically you ram the battleship , while a BB's has 6 hit points, , so takes combination attack of engage BB's with sub, then also attack BB's with cruisers, which are fast movers or Planes to kill the BB's.

The reason I have used Sub's to engage BB's in melee is because when I play with GOLD Abusers they will instantly heal the BB's condition back to 100%, if BB's is engaged in melee then other player can NOT heal his BB's before it dies.

With new game mechanics, Subs are great to block a water way which only has one dot on the water, no way to avoid it, if someone crosses water over your sub it is automatic WAR if they do not have Right of Way (RoW) or Share Maps with you

  • awesome thanks, Tyr. Good analogy. I had a feeling combat was a "to the death" sorta thing until someone posted the note about moving it to avoid combat. Didnt make sense that if your sub can only be spotted if engaged, then how could you avoid being attacked by moving "a little bit".

There's a few things that go on with submarines and all of them are frustrating. The first is a known bug that sometimes when submarines are targeted they still can not be hit for some reason. It sucks because you sometimes waste your only salvo from a stack of BB's for an hour or two and do no damage. When I really want to kill a sub that I can see that is still moving I sometimes put 10-12 infantry in their path and when the sub is under them I "attack" with the infantry and this pins the sub in place and then you can shoot it or bomb it.

the second frustrating thing is once you're visible and they "launch something" at you you get that little "I'm a target and about to be attacked icon" and after that is on you the game sees you as still engaged in combat so you never become invisible again. I've had so many frustrating experiences with subs both because I thought mine were safe and because I could not shoot the enemy subs. If you keep trying you typically eventually start hitting them but sometimes the second you send your bombers the target goes away the bombers say "attacking sea" instead of "attacking 41st submarine flotilla" 2 seconds after you launch the attack and yet sometimes you can still kill them with the "attacking sea".

  • IMO...Best way to kill subs is with Planes...also can engage them in melee which is done by simply crossing same path (dot) they are using at sea... if in range of planes use planes to kill sub while you have it engaged, subs have 4 hit points, so you need a battleship (6 hit points) or cruiser (2 hit points) with inf (1 hit point per inf) stack, or other sub , subs are slow movers and cruisers are great for chasing them down....once in melee with a sub something has to die, same as land units locked into melee... once you are in Melee with a sub, your bombers will be able to lock onto target... normally spy reports are what gives you location and you are bombarding sea because sub could have moved since latest report

  • the best way to find subs is with patrolling fighters not with spies. you can control fighters and search in a pattern finding them with spies is mostly luck though using spies in the right places can help.

even when aircraft or ships/guns lock onto subs there is a known bug that sometimes they simply can not be hit. I had a stack of 5 battleships fire at two stationary subs and do no damage at all. keep firing and sometimes it changes or send infantry to "stand on them" and attack and then you can always hit them
